NEW NEIGHBOURHOOD … APPROPRIATE SCALE
We see the neighborhood as an ensemble that integrates and enriches its environment. The city model continues well-proven typologies and complements them with differentiated public spaces. The guiding principle is based on the consideration of scale as well as the existing structures of individual, readable houses and intervening generous public spaces. Due to their cubature, materiality and design, the different houses act as an ensemble. The space opens up and creates tension and variety through a well-balanced relationship between density and opening. The entire quarter is car-free. Different passages to be used by pedestrians and cyclists link it to the surrounding structures. The compact form of the buildings and the minimization of roads dedicated to motorized traffic were designed with resource conservation and sustainability in mind.
COMPACT NEIGHBOURHOOD … GENEROUS GREEN SPACES
Spatial offers are made to the residents, which are meant to be adopted by different user groups. Interspaces form various courtyards, welcoming the entire neighborhood as semi-public spaces. Along the intersecting paths there are areas for playing and resting as well as garden- and sports areas, which strengthen the identification of the inhabitants with the new space.
The green courtyard is planted with large trees. It serves both as a space for communication and as a place where different offers aremadethat are complemented by the “active corners” of the buildings. There is a children’s playground opposite the kindergarten, a bicycle workshop in the northwestern area and the covered summer kitchen at the large yard. A covered bar can be used for barbecues or for flea markets and further enlivens the public outdoor space.
DIFFERENT DWELLING FORMS … IT’S ALL IN THE MIX
Diversity is an undeniable quality within a residential complex. Thus each floor has apartments of different sizes. The living area features an optional, detachable kitchen and opens towards the balconies situated in the corner. Due to its modular character, it is possible to offer different types of dwelling forms for different living concepts and target groups. All rooms are of a similar size and thus neutral in use. Different layouts and family configurations were taken into account, to make this a future-proof design for coming generations.
