GROWING UP IN THE MONASTERY GARDEN
The Monastery ensemble is situated in the middle of the historic town of Miltenberg between the river Main and the square “Engelplatz”. The former cloister garden within the historic sandstone wall lies fallow today as a potential communal space. The setting of the project preserves a maximum of open space within the city center and enables it for public use as a recreational and meeting place. The design of the new kindergarden and family center is thematically based on the historic garden of the Franciscan Order as a greenhouse and stages the protected garden wall monument without obstructing the view of the monastery. The urban structure of historic Miltenberg is characterized by its medieval layout. The typical narrow streets lead from the main axis towords the river “Main”. The design follows this principle and forms as a fitting the lateral conclusion of the adjacent alley. Group rooms are oriented to the garden to the south. The shed roof allows the morning sun to enter the building. Introverted rooms for sleeping or inner retreat (Room of Silence) are located at the succession of small enclosed courtyards. The central hall is a community play area with different levels. The overhanging building envelope over wall top reinterprets the historic jutting street facades.
